DNF @ p. 254 (almost the halfway mark). Leafing through the rest I concluded this was the right decision, because it only got worse.
Two stars for the beautiful title and the writing. Unfortunately I disliked everything else: the story, the characters, the misogyny, the wordiness, the repetitiveness, the loooong chapters, the annoying number of times that people say something "stikkend van het lachen".
Making it to page 254 proved to be a real slog (many of my favourite books aren't even that long ...more

I'd call this literary broccoli, because it was probably better for me than the amount of enjoyment it gave me, if that makes any sense. It's an epic book, a little too epic, in my opinion. There characters are drawn in great detail, nothing happens in the lives of the three main characters that we don't know about. The sense of place is what kept me reading - I really felt that I was there in there with them sweltering in the sun, enjoying the ocean breezes, suffering the heart breaks.
