Shelves: nature, mystery, fiction
3.5 stars for me. I found myself enjoying this much more than expected. I had to force myself through the first 40% (book club), but, belief suspended, I devoured the second half. The courtroom drama was particularly enjoyable. I also loved the natural elements.

This book got a lot of attention last year and I wondered if it would live up to the hype. The descriptive language was lovely, the story was sad and inspiring by turns, and the last section of the book is a police and courtroom drama.

I read this book without seeing the movie and was late to the game from everyone else. I will be in the unpopular reviews. This book didn't do it for me. I had 150 "ish" pages left and already knew the ending. The details of Kya throughout her life were too unbelievable; the jerk in the book, standard, the love interest, again, standard. While I appreciated the apparent knowledge of the author about the science, I didn't love the story. The dialect constantly competed amongst the main characters ...more

I thought this was a great book until I tried to summarise it to a friend "the town outcast gets accused of murder..." heeeyyyyy.. this has been done before (To Kill a Mockingbird, Jasper Jones).
To be fair, this book is significantly different in that the outcast is female and there IS a resolution. If you like books to have an ending, it's nice that all the loose ends are tied up.
