Wow. I have never read a book quite like this one. I'll admit I came to this book based on the fact that it inspired the Nirvana song "Scentless Apprentice." I've read in interviews Kurt Cobain's literary tastes included William S. Burroughs and Bukowski, so reading Suskind's dark fairytale was surprising. I'm a big fan of noir and gothic romance, so this was a pleasant surprise. This novel truly reads like a dark fairytale.
