This book is staying with me long after i have finished it. How one woman overcame isolation, her negative self-image as a result of family brainwashing, and her lack of education. I found this to be a great read and it left me with 1)questions and 2) a desire to know the Westover family. Working in higher education brings lots of students my way - their stories could fill volumes yet I am newly surprised by each one. Tara Westover's story of survival, resilience, and self-authorship moved me. Highly recommend.

This book was in turns fascinating and cringe-inducing. It is understandable that some readers have trouble believing this story, as the events described seem right out of a Dickens novel and invoked other novels that turned out to be fabrications (A Million Little Pieces comes to mind). Yet the author is careful to document conversations that are reconstructions and questions her own memory and perceptions.
