The first half of this book depends heavily on it's plot twist which we all already know. So that's a bummer. If only Robert Louis Stevenson had know how huge this book was going to be. It actually would have been pretty cool to be in on it from the beginning. But for the first half you're like yeah, yeah, I already know what's going on. There's no suspense. You're not confused like the characters are. And then the plot twist comes and it's still not particularly good.

This is nothing like its modern representations. The thing that makes Mr. Hyde menacing isn't so much the fact that he's completely evil. I know, that is probably one of the oddest things you've ever heard. Honestly though, the thing that make Mr. Hyde so awful is that he is a coward. The cowardness just makes the entire thing more unpredictable and therefore, in a way, more dangerous.

I listened to the audiobook, and though I did not much enjoy this book, the narrator did quite a good job.
The formality of the language makes it difficult to become absorbed in the story. I thought it would be more exciting, but Jekyl's revelation comes in the form of a letter after his death, not as events are unfolding. Knowing the gist of the story already, as most readers will, really impacted my enjoyment of it. ...more
