What Members Thought

Reading this book is kind of like watching Titanic. You know the boat sinks, so to speak. Throughout the book, and especially at the end, I recalled my visit to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Images seen and stories learned there came flooding back. It was a very hard place to visit, and in the end you walk away with shame and abhorrence for what one man can do to another, and also a strong sense of hope because you realize how much the human spirit can endure in spite of brutality. I've read this book a number of times, as probably anyone my age has. It was required reading in High School. Each time I read it I get more out of it. Finally read this though I expected that I would not like it.
The story is important and it should be read but I rightly felt that it would not be an enjoyable read. There are some dull bits, but what would one expect of a teen girl confined for two years in a secret annex? Her innocent romance with Peter does add some interest as does her retelling of events that I'm familiar with from history but overall, this does not make for a "fun read."
