For years I couldn't even look at the cover of this book, much less read it. I knew little about the Holocaust, and had never been required to read the book in school. I even had nightmares about Anne Frank, whom I knew almost nothing about! Then, as a public librarian, one day a patron asked for the book, and when I picked it up, I knew it was time for me to read it. What can you say about this memoir? It's heart rending and gut wrenching. It's an insider's view into something a small group actually lived. It hurts my heart to think of what Anne could have accomplished had she lived.

It seems cold even to be rating a book like this. But here we go. Anne was a very good writer. I hadn’t realized until an online discussion on this book that the Diary is actually a revised version of her diary—she intended to submit it for some kind of publication after the war. But in any case, she had some real talent. Obviously the significance of the book speaks for itself. But what I was surprised by was how thought-provoking it was beyond the issue of the Holocaust.
