What Members Thought

The Sun Also Rises is one of those books that I got away with not reading in high school and college (and graduate school). I have no idea how. But I felt like maybe I would appreciate it more when I set out to read it for the Dead Writers' Society Literary Birthdays challenge in July. I was wrong.

I've enjoyed what I've read about American expatriate writers in Paris in the 1920s. While I haven't read much Hemingway (The Old Man and the Sea in high school; some of the Nick Adams stories in colle

How do you review a book that has been hailed as brilliant and helping to change English literature by so many? First up, confess that I merely read it. I didn't take postgrad classes in it, or even understand what was going on in world literature at the time it was written....and it's not the best book I have read.

I didn't really enjoy / have time to enjoy Hemingway when I first read For Whom the Bell Tolls and Old Man and the Sea in high school, but his intrigue has always remained. About a year ago I picked up a battered copy of The Sun Also Rises while waiting for a latte at Crazy Mocha... ended up sitting and reading for about 20 minutes before realizing I had errands to be done. Those opening chapters stuck with me, though - which I ...more

I did not love this book, but I can definitely understand why it is such an enduring classic. It's certainly a book of and about a specific time and place. And as a semi-autobiographical story of Hemingway I can also see it's appeal. And I don't know enough about the history of literature to know if this is the first instance of this 'iceburg style' of writing that Hemingway does, but I suppose it's a good example of that as well. I've read so many novels where the deeper story is just eluded to ...more
