The Sun Also Rises is one of those books that I got away with not reading in high school and college (and graduate school). I have no idea how. But I felt like maybe I would appreciate it more when I set out to read it for the Dead Writers' Society Literary Birthdays challenge in July. I was wrong.

About a year ago I picked up a battered copy of The Sun Also Rises while waiting for a latte at Crazy Mocha... ended up sitting and reading for about 20 minutes before realizing I had errands to be done. Those opening chapters stuck with me, though - which I

I did not love this book, but I can definitely understand why it is such an enduring classic. It's certainly a book of and about a specific time and place. And as a semi-autobiographical story of Hemingway I can also see it's appeal. And I don't know enough about the history of literature to know if this is the first instance of this 'iceburg style' of writing that Hemingway does, but I suppose it's a good example of that as well. I've read so many novels where the deeper story is just eluded to
