The Sun Also Rises is one of those books that I got away with not reading in high school and college (and graduate school). I have no idea how. But I felt like maybe I would appreciate it more when I set out to read it for the Dead Writers' Society Literary Birthdays challenge in July. I was wrong.

The Sun Also Rises had been on my "want to read" list for a while... I didn't really enjoy / have time to enjoy Hemingway when I first read For Whom the Bell Tolls and Old Man and the Sea in high school, but his intrigue has always remained. I did not love this book, but I can definitely understand why it is such an enduring classic. It's certainly a book of and about a specific time and place. And as a semi-autobiographical story of Hemingway I can also see it's appeal. And I don't know enough about the history of literature to know if this is the first instance of this 'iceburg style' of writing that Hemingway does, but I suppose it's a good example of that as well. This story seemed to be chock full of really unlikable characters--a testament to why drinking to excess is not a good thing. I really wanted to like Jake himself, but in the end, I just couldn't. I found many of the interactions between the characters to be interesting, especially how events from Brett's past affected her current relationships.
