Read it in high school and liked it very much. Just re-read it for a book discussion group, and still liked it, although I wasn't as happy with Golding's writing style this time around. I disliked the way he ends chapters so abruptly, and some of his descriptions of action left me not quite sure what was going on. I was much more struck this time also with the symbolism of the island, the pighead, and the various roles that the boys took on. I couldn't help but think of "Gilligan's Island," wher

So dark, so heartbreaking, so thought-provoking...I was so disturbed after reading this, and yet I was never once surprised by the storyline, or the inescapably sad truth that humans are capable of such cruelty. It parallels so many "unspeakable acts" that we hear about all the time, but the shock value of this novel isn't that they are children, but that their behavior is such that occurs among society, perhaps more often than we realize, or admit.
