This is one of those books that my teachers in high school didn't assign me, but should've. Classic British fiction that explores what happens when you strand people for weeks away from civilization. It doesn't take long, as Golding points out in notes by essayist E. L. Epstein, to tap into that "heart of darkness" that Joseph Conrad found in human nature. Before Hunger Games, there was Lord of the Flies. I've owned this book since high school and since I had seen the movie as a teen I was never interested in reading the book. However, since it's such a short read, and since my new goal of actually reading the books I own and not just collecting them, I decided to give it a shot. Well written, intriguing, disturbing.
