For some years, I was in a reading slump. The then-popular appeal of grimdark, bad-boy protagonists (“bad-boy” for me denotes attitude, not gender) wore off its novelty and left me wanting for more substance, more realistic characterization. I really enjoyed this book, but at the samee time I wasn't really blown away. The whole book was basically set up for the rest of the series, which is normal for a first book in a fantasy series.
I really enjoyed the characters, although, so far, I have only really become attached to one or 2 of them.
The best thing about this book was probably Robin Hobb's writing, although it took me some time to get into it. After that it was a really quick read. ...more
