Fascinating inside look at old New York upper class. The novel poses as a love story, when it is actually far from it. Wharton paints a clear picture of what it means to bend to the pressures and whims of the societal "tribe". The end made me want to throw the book out the window, yet it could not have ended any other way and stayed true to the story's deeper connotations. Curious to see what Scorsese did with the film adaptation. ...more
