This was honestly just a weird read for me. I really liked the book, and I thought the writing was so good, but I did find it really hard to read and so slow to get through. Not that the story was particularly slow but it was not a book that I could just casually read, it required my undivided attention to really appreciate it.

This book is like nothing else I've ever read, it is quite simply magical (pun intended). This book IS a stand alone it may not seem like it when you're reading it but Ms. Novik wraps the story up WONDERFULLY.

Indeed, I will give a BAG of cookies to Naomi Novik for this book!

How do I begin to talk about this enchanting (there really is no word to describe it, thanks Robin Hobb) story? For a long time now, I've only heard high praise for Naomi Novik's Uprooted and each time I did, the book went further and further up my reading list. When I finally read it last week, it was exactly the kind of book I was looking for. I've been wanting to read more fantasy for awhile, and though I have a number of series I want to get stuck into, I am only reading library books right How do I begin to talk about this enchanting (there really is no word to describe it, thanks Robin Hobb) story? For a long time now, I've only heard high praise for Naomi Novik's Uprooted and each time I did, the book went further and further up my reading list. When I finally read it last week, it was exactly the kind of book I was looking for. I've been wanting to read more fantasy for awhile, and though I have a number of series I want to get stuck into, I am only reading library books right now so standalone novels are much easier to obtain. Anyway, let me stop rambling and tell you a little bit about this wondrous book that definitely enchanted me right from the beginning.

Uprooted is about Agnieszka, a girl who lives in a small village in the valley alongside her family and her best friend, Kasia. Right next to her village, there lies a corrupted wood, wherein deadly peril lies for some unlucky souls who tread too far in its shadows. Every ten years, a wizard called The Dragon comes down from his tower to her village and chooses a girl to take with him, the price for keeping the Wood's darkness at a safe distance from the village. This year, everyone thinks he will take Kasia, the most beautiful girl in the valley. But they are all wrong.

I was immediately grabbed by the premise of this book and knew it was going to take me on an incredible storytelling journey, but the story it ended up telling was even more than I could ever have imagined. I am always really careful with giving too much away in reviews, because I so strongly believe in the reader experiencing a story without too many words put inside their heads, so I am just going to say that if you are a lover of magic and fantasy and kickass female characters, you will undoubtedly fall in love with this book as much as I did. Naomi Novik is an inventive and skillful writer. I am enormously amazed by her imagination and her ability to twist the fairy tale genre into something as incredibly unique as Uprooted. Her characters, especially Agnieszka and The Dragon are ones I would follow around for many books and never tire of. I simply cannot say enough how much I enjoyed reading this magical story.

I know this is a really short and badly written review, but just trust me on this. Pick up a copy of Uprooted and get transported away from Earth for the hours you spend reading it! I just couldn't get into this book as much as I tried. The first couple of chapters I thought it was going to be good, but as I continued I just pushed myself through the rest. The magic system didn't make any sense. It was just like they were saying sifjoierewurolsefj all the time. And I wan't to throw the book across the room every time the dragon spoke....treat women like shit much?? ...more
