After Brandon Sanderson announced he would continue to tell the stories of Scadrial, the world in which the Mistborn series takes place, thousands of fans sighed in collective relief and delight. It would have been such a waste of potential and creativity if Sanderson had left the story as a trilogy after we all fell in love with the heroes, magic system, and mythology he created. Thankfully for his fans, Sanderson is one of the most prolific writers who consistently provides content of genuine After Brandon Sanderson announced he would continue to tell the stories of Scadrial, the world in which the Mistborn series takes place, thousands of fans sighed in collective relief and delight. Thankfully for his fans, Sanderson is one of the most prolific writers who consistently provides content of genuine quality.

"The Alloy of Law" is yet another excellent novel by this very talented man. He has stated this book will be a spin-off trilogy that does not even encompass his original plan of a "trilogy of trilogies" for the Mistborn series as a whole. The dedication this man puts into his work is incredible and I have unwavering respect for him. Mistborn fans have much to look forward to!

The story of "Alloy of Law" itself revolves around Lawkeepers Wax and Wayne about 300 years after the events of the original series. It probably isn't necessary to read the original trilogy to appreciate this novel, but I don't recommend people do that because one will undoubtedly appreciate the story more with a previous knowledge of the history, lore, and magic system. Speaking of the magic system, Sanderson managed to make it appear fresh and different by introducing the "Twinborn" concept, which means that a person possesses both Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities. There are currently 16 metals that each endow the user with different powers depending on the person's metallic art, so the combinations are varied and exciting. When you add the new technologies that have sprouted after the fall of the Last Empire, the result is a story that is both familiar yet new and with a promising future.

Unsurprisingly, Sanderson's characters and world building are top notch. From the opening chapter, the reader is planted in the middle of the action and immediately grows fond of Wax. Sanderson is simply an expert of cinematic and immersive writing. And I must say, he is hilarious. There were moments during which I literally laughed out loud because the interactions between the three main characters (Wax, Wayne, and Marasi) are so well done.

The action rarely lets up during the course of this short novel. Its short length honestly is one of my few complaints. Another is that the scope of the conflict driving the story appears to be rather small compared to the original trilogy. For now, this series has proven to be greatly enjoyable and satisfying and I have full confidence that it will only get better and more grand in scope.

I highly recommend this novel. But please read the original Mistborn trilogy before picking this on up! ...more
