This is a solid overview of Dr. John Snow and his discovery of the cause of the cholera epidemics in Victorian London. Johnson is a somewhat pedestrian author, but he gets the job done. One thing he does excel at: he conveys detailed descriptions very clearly. What's missing is the narrative drive coupled with the lyricism of a Sacks or Gawande. ...more

Highly informative! When I first started reading, I found myself telling everyone about it. The reach and breadth - public health, city design, how the public views science - it's amazing. I never did finish the epilogue - it really dragged on abou urbanization, not something I'm very interested in. ...more
