okay so this book was not what i expected. I fully expected to go into it and love it and have it as one of my favourite books of all time, yet it fell so short of expectations that i feel i built it up too much.
It started off so boring and slow i wanted to DNF it. The plot and characters were all so meh, and the writing style really wasn't working for me. But i feel this book's main issue is it's pacing, because it really was all over the place. After a while i got ...more

I tried. I really did. But halfway through this book (Chapter 51) I was still bored. Maybe I’ll come back to it someday, but for now I’ve got a growing TBR pile begging to be whittled down.

The Name of the Wind is the story of the fiery Kvothe, and his overdue return to glory, as he recounts the legendary events of his past. His trouper's childhood and all that it entailed, his brief time at the University and all learned there, his stubborn affections for the one who provided harmony to his melody, and his discovering the name of the wind.

This was an excellent novel; epic in it's scope, and masterful in it's storytelling. It felt very much like the start of something big *4.5 stars

His trouper's childhood and all that it entailed, his brief time at the University and all learned there, his stubborn affections for the one who provided harmony to his melody, and his discovering the name of the wind.

This was an excellent novel; epic in it's scope, and masterful in it's storytelling. It felt very much like the start of something big, which can be both a positive and a negative. In this case, though, the former prevails, because while at times it does feel like Rothfuss is using this book as a tool to tell a greater story down the line, the majority of the novel is able to stand on it's own, and do so fantastically at that!

It's an all-consuming story, with an incredibly compelling narrative and meticulous world-building, which only attests to Rothfuss' writing prowess. There's no doubt that after reading the book, you will have felt like you'd become a student of the University yourself, like you'd roughed the streets of Tarbean, and experienced Imre in all of it's artistic glory.

Kvothe's story is told as he reminisces on the life he used to live. It's told through a grown man's accounts of his past, and as a result of this, there were points at which the pacing slowed considerably, allowing whole chapters to feel monotonous and drawn-out. These were inevitable though, because Kvothe insists on offering every minute detail of his life, so the luls in pacing were understandable, and something you quickly grew accustomed to.

And speaking of Kvothe, Rothfuss has succeeded in creating one of the greatest depictions of a fictional 'hero' with his character. He was likable yet stubborn, wise yet naive. He was unbelievably intelligent, yet it didn't feel forced. All other characters were well-written too, but Rothfuss managed to achieve something special with Kvothe.

So yeah all in all, The Name of the Wind is a brilliant book, with the smallest flaws that are overshadowed by wonderful writing, characterisation and world-building! I'd recommend to anyone remotely interested in fantasy. ...more

The story of Kvothe is an incredible adventure! I absolutely loved the story! The writing was beautiful and the entire world very interesting. The book is a bit slow paced, or at least demands a lot of time and energy. It has taken a long time for me to read so that was a bit frustrating.. But overall an amazing book <3
