I'll admit it - I was utterly blown away by this book. Despite its length, it managed to capture my attention completely. I was immensely interested in the characters - especially Jack and Aliena.

The general complaint about the book is that there are many long descriptive passages. This is true, but I never actually felt it was too long, and appreciated the practical explanations. Wow, even though this book took me a while to get into, it was definitely worth every minute of it. This has romance, suspense, and best of all, it provides a wonderful picture of what living in medieval times would have been like - - - NOT from the perspective of the nobility, but from the the perspective of the common man. My husband read this book and suggested that I read it. I told him I would wait until our vacation. Since it is so long, I figured I would have to take just one book. I was right. When did I finish? As the plane landed. How's that for timing? It was quite a tale. At its heart is the building of a cathedral in 12th century England. But there's a lot more. A wonderful historial novel - not too heavy on the romance! It brings the early middle ages to vivid life. The story of Tom-the-Builder and the Prior is endlessly engaging. The social and political background is well handled - no modern perspectives intrude...

Interesting, educational, moral, captivating, dark, so many things wrapped up in a nice long tale that you can really sink your teeth into.
