I didn't really need to read this, as it turns out.
I'd already read the second volume, and there was basically nothing in this that wasn't described adequately there. I was surprised at how much of the book passed before the magicians found Sonea and took her to the school. Pretty slow, really, with more background than necessary. There's nothing particularly original here, though, for anyone very familiar with the genre. The Harry Potter series covers a lot of the same ground, but much better and with far greater detail.
