First of all, I'm not the target demographic for this book!
I got it as part of the Humble Audiobook Bundle and gave it a chance as I generally enjoy reinterpretations of mythological themes - and this is based on the tale of Persephone and Hades.

I found the protagonist, Pierce, to be infuriatingly clueless - a large part of the book is her doing some variation on "how should I know?" and "what have I done to deserve this?". And I get no real sense of development on her part, she comes to some re

I see a lot of 1-3 star reviews, and I'm thinking, "Ummm... should I have not liked this book as much as I did? Because I really liked it!"

I guess I kinda agree with what other people have said. Not much ACTUALLY happens (I think the whole story takes place over a 3- or 4-day period), the timeline DOES jump around a lot (most of what happens is really what happenED before the story started), Pierce definitely isn't a very "strong" character, and she makes (made) a lot of stupid decisions. It's an okay book. I feel like Meg Cabot's losing touch with teenagers though. She's written some great, strong heroines like Jess and Suze, but I feel like with her later books, they're more hit-or-miss. I like how both of those two, in particular, are mature for their ages. Jess because of her power and the experiences she's had because of it, and Suze... well, cuz of her power. Ha! But also Suze is an only child and a New Yorker, which adds to the maturity (only c

OK, the main characters is annoying and whiny and her maybe love interest is mean and creepy. BUT for some reason this book's imagery and emotion really made an impression on me -- including giving me strange Lariam-style dreams. Strange dream inducement bumps this book from a 2 to a 3.

... I'm a little worried by all the reviews I've seen for this one, but Meg Cabot has earned my undying devotion. Meaning: I will cross my fingers and read the book despite the reviews. ...more

This book was quite different from Meg Cabot's usual writing. The heroine was less bubbly, more troubled, and the style was quite different as well. I loved the mythology of the world she's set up, loved the setting (a small, hurricane-torn Florida island) and loved the characters, really. Was not as in love with the "teasing," though. The protagonist kept hinting at what had happened to her, and why she and her mother had moved to the island suddenly, and I just wanted to know! By the time she ...more
