A special note to those who say my review stopped them from reading this book: No no no! Read it! I actually reread the whole series last summer and enjoyed it immensely. Just read it for what it is: ludicrous, well-written, humorous, delicious TRASH. Just don't expect it to be the most brilliant novel ever written and you'll be fine.

If you're thinking of reading Outlander, let me just put out a quick trigger warning for physical and sexual assault. Also, full disclosure that there's some problematic content in this book, most notably that sometimes the interactions between Jamie and Claire don't feel totally consensual.
Congratulations to this book, I made it about 90% of the way through because I was forced to ask myself, "Really?! What the fuck am I reading?!"

Yes, I know, I am giving this piece of time travel histori-porn, four stars! I stand prepared to turn in both my Feminist Card and my Discerning Reader card. Though I feel dirty for having read and enjoyed this - I DID enjoy it!
SPOILERS AHEAD.
I can pick holes in this book all day long. Claire, traveling in the Scottish Highlands, is suddenly transported from 1945 to 1743 (or thereabouts), has very little culture shock. Once they give her some proper clothes, she fits right into 1743 Scotland. ...more

i picked up this book during what we'll call a streak of youthful indulgence, when i actually regularly perused the shelves of the romance novel section in the bookstore-- and was shocked to discover not just the trashy throwaway stuff that fills the pages of almost everything in that section, but a bona fide historical fiction novel. gabaldon clearly researched her time periods fanatically, and her characters are compelling and the plot gripping. and yes, there's a nice generous helping of racy

I checked this book out because the Gabaldon's books kept coming through circulation. I thought, "She must be good, a lot of people at this library read her books." What I didn't know is that the publisher is disguising her novels as regular old fiction when really they're romance novels. I got about midway through the book and these crazy sexual encounters started popping up...by that time I couldn't stop reading. And I actually liked the book...I even checked out another of her books. Outlande

It was really very compelling.
And I'm hesitant to start the next in the series because really, I should be working. But I don't want to do anything except keep reading. That? Is a problem.
Also, I hated the ending. If this were NOT a series I would be suuuuper pissed off right now. As I know there are many more where this came from, it matters a bit less, but still worth mentioning. ...more
