This is an exciting and heartfelt story about a strong girl and her younger siblings who are “on their own” when they’re apparently abandoned by their mother. I’ve always loved tales of kids left on their own (see A Long Way To Go, etc.) and this is a particularly good book with a compelling main character.

So, I knew people who were obsessed with these books when I was younger. Homecoming and Dicey's Song were held up there with Judy Blume's books as being THE books for young girls . . . and somehow I never read them. I dunno . . . the old covers just weren't that appealing. And the weird thing is, I've read and loved almost every other book by Cynthia Voigt. Jackaroo? I can't count the number of times I've read that one. And The Callander Papers? Still a favorite! But the Tillerman books just see

My second favorite book in the series (after A Solitary Blue), mainly because it is more of an adventure than the other books--Dicey and her siblings find themselves abandoned and decide to journey to find a grandmother they never knew rather than potentially get split up by social services. Their struggle for food and shelter is realistic, and once they reach their grandmother, they still have to win her over. The movie version was pretty good as well.
