This is such a strange book. I found the beginning to be a bit of a hard slog, but after 50 pages, things really picked up for me. Things started to actually happen. Disturbing things, mind you, but still.

First book of 2024 and it was a weird one. The description grabbed me - I love haunting, compressed masterworks! An expat inspires suspicion and distrust in a foreign land? Sign me up! The writing style was propulsive and unsettling and there were so many great uneasy details scattered in the stream-of-consciousness narration. But the sentences were long and sometimes hard to parse, so I couldn't read this before bed as it required a lot of attention. And then I got to the end and found no payof ...more

Short, strange, compelling. She loses her way a bit two thirds of the way through—orI lost my way!—but very much worth a read.
