A couple of years ago, a (not that much younger) colleague and I were discussing the state of AIDS research, which he lamented as disappointing due to the lack of either a cure or a vaccine after so many years of searching. I requested this book from the library and even read a few pages and decided that it wasn't for me. It starts like so many other stories about AIDS told only from the perspective of white, wealthy, cis gay men. To boot, it was written by a straight, white cis woman.
However, a friend recommended this to me some months later, she not knowing of my history with the book. She did know of my interest in the organizing work of ACT UP and and her word was good enough for me to try again. And I am glad ...more
