Clever use of the woke-up-with-amnesia trope, with shades of Dark Lord of Derkholm and The Tough Guide to Fantasyland. I loved the bits of the actual Frugal Wizards' Guide (TM) especially, and thought the ending as well as a number of the twists and reveals were really great.
I have to say, I thought the male narrator's voice was okay, but one of the voices he did was actively irritating, and I think I might have liked this more if I had read the physical book. ...more

Everything about this book just appealed to me. The title, the cover, the book-in-a-book excepts, the back blurb. So even though I was just going to flip through it, I ended up reading the entire thing over the weekend.
And fortunately the story itself lived up to my expectations. I loved the mix of fantasy, mythology and realism, and liked seeing how John slowly remembered more and more of his past, and pieced together his life from clues along the way... even when he turned out to be spectacula ...more

I'm in Chapter 13- can't remember any of the characters names, don't care about any of the characters. The premise is interesting but I'm just not invested at all and I'm 1/3 of the way through. I personally really love the reckoners series so it's not the silly humor that's bothering me. I think sandersons strength is getting me to care about characters and what happens to them and really digging into mechanics and the way magic and the worlds work. This book has none of that so far. I'm confus
