Oh, Margaret Atwood, I can't quit you.

I read Alias Grace in the late 1990s in college. The book was still relatively new at the time. It was unlike the other books by Atwood we had read in the class - this is historical fiction, as opposed to the speculative fiction of, say, The Handmaid's Tale. Based on a true story, Atwood takes readers to Canada for a bit of a literary murder mystery.

Apparently Goodreads did not yet know that I read this in college for a Canadian literature class; and yes, I took a Canadian literature class, which is something you can do if your study “abroad“ is in said country. I remember it being really lovely and definitely creepy. The book, not Canada.

i can't quite decide what i thought of this book. it was beautifully written of course, with atwood's peerless character depth in full force. however, whereas with most of her other books the questions are mostly answered at the end (or at least answered enough that i was able to piece together my own interpretation of them) the ending of this book was a bit of a letdown, with too much left up to the reader to decide, and almost no satisfying resolution (in my opinion) to simon jordan's characte ...more

This booked worked on many levels for me - historical fiction, intriguing mystery, and a look at the motivations of and relationships between men and women in the 19th century (and beyond). I found her prose as lovely as expected (I've read Atwood before), and the descriptions of domestic life in this era surprisingly fascinating. ...more
