Someone I respect for clear reading comprehension, humanity, lack of pretension, vocabulary, and knowing her own likes/dislikes for topics ranging from philosophy to supermarket trashy reading said this was amazing. I paid attention.

She is right. This puts you in a broken world and you slowly piece together what's happening and more importantly, what happened to cause this. It does jump back and forth which can make me impatient, since if I get invested in a storyline then an interruption withou

A 2.5 star review. Rounded up because of Syenite and Damaya.

Surprisingly boring, considering how many high ratings it has on Goodreads. Also, the writing style really took some getting used to - especially in the chapters where the author decided to break the fourth wall, as well as in the chapters focusing on Essun. In fact, the first few chapters almost made me give up on the book completely, as I cannot stand books written in second character.

Fortunately the chapters focusing on Syenite and D

This book was really boring to me and depressing. I read a lot of dark books and for some reason this one just didn't sit well with me and I couldn't get into the story.

I also didn't like all the different POV's from the different characters because I couldn't keep them straight. I usually don't have this problem. I also think the number one reason I didn't like this book is Syenite. I did not like her at all or her story line. I just wanted to skip everything that had to do with her.

It took me a long time to get into this book- nonlinear narratives are not my jam.
What I liked: the world building! DANG.
What I didn't like: the child murder(s). ALSO WHO IS THE NARRATOR?!?

I did immediately start the sequel.

2021: Discovered that Mark Reads read this series, and it was the long-distance, time-discordant book group I wanted when I read these the first time around. So I read them again. UGH, still not a fan of child murder, but I was able to appreciate more of the world building

Very different kind of fantasy than I’ve been reading. Fascinating world created by Jamison.

I'm glad I saw this through to the end, I ended up really loving the characters and the story once I was able to tie it all together in my mind. ...more

This book kept me guessing. And it was worth waiting to get to the end to find out how things fit together.

I want to know more about stone eaters. They are terrifying.
