Maybe some spoilers for this, and Kurt Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle."
If you're a grown up, go read Cat's Cradle. (From my review, "According to the Bokononist creation myth (creation foma, if you will) God created man from mud. Interestingly, it is the problem of mud that Ice-9 seeks to solve.")
That is essentially the same story as this one. In both, you have a problem of mud. In both, there is a new - scientific - substance that duplicates itself exponentially and threatens mankind.

It feels like Louis Sachar is off his game. There's nothing really wrong with this book, I just expect more from him. The plot is simple and linear, there is very little subplot or complexity, and just a couple funny parts.
