I found the unapologetic use and display of wealth, and the preoccupation with social status and family/economic/political connections, offensive, so I had to stop taking the story seriously to be able to continue reading the novel and to enjoy it. I feel many ways about this book? I only became really motivated to read it with the release of the trailer for the movie, so it was great to imagine Constance Wu as Rachel as I read this. Everything else about it was... meh. Granted, I only read certain types of books for fun at this point, so I don’t know what non-romance/YA-fiction looks like at this point, but the storytelling was meh; the characters felt undeveloped (I have Feelings about the complete lack of anxiety Rachel felt about using ...more

Such a fun, soapy book to read as a weekend treat. I remember seeing this when I worked at the bookstore and loving the cover, but thinking "ugh, too shallow" when I flipped through a few pages. Yeah, there's not a lot of depth here, but it's sure fun, and a fascinating look into a life I'll never get within 10,000 feet of.

This is a sweeping family saga of multiple generations of, as the title says, crazy rich Asians. I recommend it if you like to read about complex family relationships and super luxurious lifestyles (jetting off to Macau and then Australia at a moment's notice!) I super recommend this if you have been or plan to go to Singapore. I think my love of Singaporean food which is lovingly described here upped my rating by at least a half star.
