I first read/ listened to this in 2021 and thought it was the best of the Strike books by far. It pulled me out of a weird time in my life and I really enjoyed it. I feel like on re-read book 7 has just nudged it out of first place. Loved the addition of Pat to the agency in this book, loved the development of Strike’s backstory regarding his family. The real reason I read these intricate and overlong mysteries is for the relationship between Cormoran Strike, head of his own detective agency, a man with a tangled family history who lost a leg in Afganistan; and his partner at the agency, once a temp secretary, Robin Ellacott, who has trauma in her past and present, and a keen intelligence.
