This book was WILDLY depressing. Oh, you didn't know that being a settler was really hard? Turns out it's really hard! Sometimes people are jerks for no apparent reason, and that makes life harder! And your children will die! Then you die!

Interesting historical fiction of Whatcom County, WA. Read this for book club, and although the first 100 pages were tough, it was worth hanging in there. The remaining 300 were great. Really enjoyed learning about this piece of western WA.
