I first tried reading Murakami several years ago, when The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle came highly recommended to me from several friends. I didn’t make it very far into the book, but not due to lack of interest; as I recall, I had checked it out from the library and had to return it due to there being a long holds list. I tried. I really, really tried. For 600 pages I tried. If I ever go to Tokyo, I'm bound to be disappointed. I'm going to be looking for magical realism everywhere (what will it be? I don't know, but I expect to know it when I see it). I really enjoyed this book, even though there were parts of it I didn't "get" - however, I think that's always going to be true of my relationship with Murakami (we ARE in a relationship, but he's far too smart to acknowledge it.
