As always I'm a sucker for books where we follow a group of childhood or college friends into their adult lives and here's yet another example of the genre. Contrary to what I'd read about this book (including in the Goodreads summary) before picking it up, artistic talent is not--in my opinion, at least--its main theme. The main theme, as I saw it, is wealth and social status: the ability of wealth to beget more wealth, and the chasm separating the wealthy and the middle class in American society. Such a wonderful story. Although I'm a bit younger than the protagonist, I fully get her almost pathological need to be an outsider. Within a bunch of outsiders. She nails so much of the language we throw around daily, be it teenage girl, young gay man, older mothers, missing sons..... I'm almost finished and really don't want it to end. Just amazing.
