This is a slim, beautifully written little book. The first half is wonderful, and really gives you a sense for how confusing the beginning of the war would have been for a child. It's almost fairy tale like. But as the book, and the war, go on the ethereal writing stopped working for me. I needed to know some concrete things, none of which were answered, leaving me ultimately very frustrated.

So many people love this book but I wasn’t one of them.
This is obviously a debut novel, the author straining with every syllable to impress. Without question there is some beautiful writing but they are single phrases that interrupt in order to be admired rather than flowing with the narrative in order to turn the whole story into the object of delight.
The faux naiveté of viewing the world through the eyes of a 7 year old is an interesting device but after the novelty wears off the constraints o ...more

3.5 stars. Compelling and beautifully written, but the ending ultimately left me unsatisfied. Definitely YA, despite the character's young age.
