I saw the movie before I read the book, so I knew that the ending would be SAD! I won't give it all away, but I wouldn't give this book to a kid younger than 13 or 14. And there is some heavy foreshadowing, so you can probably figure out what's going to happen before it takes place, even if you haven't seen the movie.

But I'm warning you...this book is SAD!

One of my all time favorite children's books. I have a very vivid memory of sitting in a circle in fifth grade as my teacher read The Chapter out loud, and everyone in the class was crying. Everyone. It really is that affecting and powerful. A beautiful take on a difficult subject.

The family seems to be from an earlier generation to when the story is told (70s). Though this is probably a culture gap.

The characterizations are concise but true as are the emotions portrayed.Deceptively light story-telling style of a simple but well finished plot.
Excellent children's book.Well written with good characterizations, interesting story development and a rounded but believable ending.

I love this story. I read it sometime during the year in 4th grade, and I think it was in the fall. But I love it. Its so sweet, and so sad, and even though the ending makes me cry, its still one of my favorite stories. Its a great message about seeing how far your imagination can take you. Its a classic.

My friend gave me this book along with a box of kleenex. I was grateful for both. I pretty sure this was written for kids but adults will like it too. It is very sad, but also quite magical.

This book does not stand up as well for me in the present day and I expected it to, but it is still a poignant look at childhood.
