Victoria Schwab also writes under the name V.E. Schwab, whose A Darker Shade of Magic I'd heard great things about (although I'd yet to get my hands on it), so I was excited to try this YA outing of hers. Now I'm not excited about Darker Shade anymore. This was just...muddled -- muddled world-building, flat, muddled characters. I never felt anything the entire time I was slogging through the 400 plus pages, except perhaps impatience -- certainly not wonder, or shock, or any affection for anybody

I really liked this a lot. I think I prefer Schwab's adult work but this was really good - August and Kate are both complex characters with varied motivations and conflicts driving them, and I liked that Kate wasn't a one-note emotionless 'tough girl' trope. It reminded me of The Demon's Lexicon, which is a compliment. I'll definitely be back for the sequels.

This book was so good! It was my first foray into the world of Victoria Schwab and I have to say that she -or at least this book - lives up to the hype. I really loved the characters she crafted and the world she built in this novel and she uses words so beautifully.
The one thing I didn't like about this book was that I felt that it was a bit slow to start and it took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I was so engrossed the entire time and THAT ENDING! I need the next book now! I ...more

4.5...so damn good! Schwab is becoming one of my favorites❤️

Call this one 3.5 stars, but I rounded up.
This book is right on the edge of too dark for me, and I read it like I’d been compelled to. At least half a dozen times, I realized the turn it was about to take, knew I wouldn’t like it, and put the book down — and then picked it up a few minutes later and kept reading. It was not pleasant, but then, it’s clearly not supposed to be.
I think Schwab, in all her pseudonyms, is not exactly what I want to read. But this book is fast-paced and intense, and ...more

4.5 stars.
Schwab might be one of my favorite authors working today. Yet again, she takes a few familiar elements and remixes then into something completely original and utterly engaging. In this version of earth, we get some monster-hunting through the sketchy parts of town (a la every UF series ever), a star-crossed pair (a la every YA ass-kicker of the last decade), and a sprinkling of Lauren Beukes' Zoo City where the echoes of awful crimes physically manifest into reality. The world crafted ...more
