This story is the second one that I’ve read that’s told in verse (the first was by Jacqueline Woodson for class last year) and both made me cry. It was good, I laughed while reading “Jack’s” words, and I was pleased to be so emotionally involved in the story. Personally, I loved all the moments where Jack corrected the teacher in his poetry, or complained about the ones he didn’t like. This only takes a few minutes to read and is such a wonderful little book. A child must write poetry for a school assignment, much to the child's dismay. (Poetry is for girls, poetry isn't cool, etc.) The child (and narrator) finally finds inspiration in the form of a yellow dog he once knew.

I really enjoyed the poetry in this book.I think it was nicely written. I really liked how Jack not only learned how to voice his emotions, but share them with others.
From a more subjective stance, I would have liked to hear more about Jack's father and dog. Regardless, a nice quick read for middle grade readers, and I think it's a great gateway to get them reading more poetry ...more
