I love the plot, the philosophical and political underpinnings and commentary, and the basic premise of the trilogy. The story alone is enough to get me reading. However, I found it harder to suspend my disbelief with this book than in the first. I am no stranger to speculative fiction and am used to encountering talking animals, magic, strange machinery etc. in my reading. But I have a much harder time swallowing unrealistic human behavior. I liked most of this book better than the first one, mostly because it focuses on a new character, Will, who I like much better than Lyra. Lyra and Will dash between worlds trying to collect allies and information about Dust. As before, the writing style is uneven--very believable and engaging when speaking about the children's feelings, less so when dealing with adults or dialog. This series is crack in word form. ie. I loved the way I felt while reading them and read the entire series in a couple of weeks. But I went too fast! And now I can't remember why I liked them so much except that they were fantastical and had talking bears and made me feel like being brave is easy.

This series is incredibly dark. The audio cast is fantastic, but I'm surprised at how much violence is in the story.
