A kind of odd mixture: there's a lot going on, but perhaps a bit too much. The major plot surrounds Felix, who at age three was somehow fused with an alien being during a scientific accident. This has led to physical issues not to mention the emotional and psychological ones of having another being inside his brain. And, in 30 days (the book is a countdown) there will be a Procedure to - they hope - separate the two. Then there's the Felix-and-Hector friendship, or possibly more. And Hector bein ...more

When Felix was younger, he was accidentally fused with a 4th-dimensional being named Zyx. Soon he'll be undergoing a procedure that will separate them, which is urgent because both of them might die if it doesn't happen. For most of Felix's life he's been annoyed by Zyx's interruptions and the potential End looming over his life. But when Felix and Zyx discover chess, Felix begins to communicate more with Zyx and try to understand his other half before they are gone.

This was an odd novel. I hone When Felix was younger, he was accidentally fused with a 4th-dimensional being named Zyx. For most of Felix's life he's been annoyed by Zyx's interruptions and the potential End looming over his life. But when Felix and Zyx discover chess, Felix begins to communicate more with Zyx and try to understand his other half before they are gone.

This was an odd novel. I honestly did not read the description before I read it (I met the author at a conference and was interested to see if this was more middle grade than YA, which is where I have it in my library). Felix's voice sounded older than 13 - that might have been the narrator of the audiobook, but I definitely was thinking of Felix as being 15 or 16. But I suppose his crush on Hector would have worked for a 13-year-old too. When he ran away later in the story, I definitely wasn't thinking of him being so young, though. Now I understand why everyone was trying to help him and take care of him! Grandy was quite the interesting character, and I liked the idea of a genderfluid grandparent as well as the invented pronouns Felix uses for ven(vo, ven, veir, veirs, veirself).

There was a lot going on in this story. I wanted there to be more of a good-bye between Felix and Zyx, or to somehow know what happens to Zyx in the end. I was getting kinda frustrated by Felix's annoyance at Zyx in the beginning, but now I'm reading some reviews of the story and seeing how this would relate to someone frustrated by their own disability (if Zyx represents a disability). I also wanted more at the end (view spoiler).

I can't quite say that I think this is middle grade (mostly because I couldn't imagine Felix as being only 13). Maybe upper middle grade - I don't think it's totally out of place in my library's YA collection.

Audiobook notes: I rather liked the different narrator for Zyx, although I wonder if having the voice sound more "female" gave this story something more than what would have been on the page. ...more
