Newbery winner.
Everyone's read this, right? Or seen the movie? Stanley Yelnats is cursed by his no-good pig-stealing ancestor, and has been falsely accused of stealing sneakers. Now he's doing time at Camp Green Lake, digging holes every day. But fate works its magic, and he discovers he has history in the area, that leads him into the desert and to treasure of sorts.
Very clever, very funny, almost poetic in its structure. Kudos to Sachar - I didn't know he had it in him. ...more

I read this a few years ago at my sister-in-law's urgings. At the time I hadn't read much YA stuff (as an adult anyway) and I was pretty skeptical but I wound up really like this one. The book is about a boy who gets sent to a children's work camp for a crime he didn't commit. The camp is in the desert and the boys spend all day out in the sun digging holes as their punishment (at least they think that's the reason.) The story has some fun twists and turns and is really well done.

I loved Louis Sachar books as a kid. I must have read the Wayside School books a hundred times. I had no idea the movie Holes was based on a book and I had no idea that it was written by Sachar. A great book, I read it in a day while staying in a hotel for work. Highly recommended to kid and adult readers alike.

This book was done into a play by the Seattle Children's Theatre so I read it to enjoy the play more. Everyone seemed to like it9the book and the play). Some a lot. I was OK with it.
