I read this a few years ago at my sister-in-law's urgings. At the time I hadn't read much YA stuff (as an adult anyway) and I was pretty skeptical but I wound up really like this one. The book is about a boy who gets sent to a children's work camp for a crime he didn't commit. The camp is in the desert and the boys spend all day out in the sun digging holes as their punishment (at least they think that's the reason.) The story has some fun twists and turns and is really well done.

This was a little predictable but not a bad teen book. The characters seemed a little 1-dimensional to me. I did enjoy the family/friend connections through several generations and how events and actions in our past have profound impacts on the future.
I love how all the pieces of the story fit together like a puzzle. Although humorous, the mood is one of hopelessness, which the movie adaptation just could not capture.
My 11-year-old said, "It's awesome! I've already read it twice! I finished the last 50 pages last night and I read it again today!"
