Ugh. So did not like. No six year old expresses themselves like any of the four narrators in this novel and the use of the congenital birthmark as a symbol of inherited behavior was offensive.

I almost gave up on this book while reading the first section. The main character is a spoiled, horrid -- perhaps sociopathic -- 6 year old with an insufferable mother. I'm glad I stuck with it because the sections that followed, telling the stories of his father, grandmother, and great-grandmother as 6-year-olds, were very absorbing.
