It only takes a few chapters in this novel in verse for the reader to see that everything is not fine in this household. Mazeline lives alone with her mother, who is severely depressed to the point of being nonfunctional after the death of Mazzy's little sister Olivia. The story of how Olivia died, a real shocker at the end and not what I expected, is revealed gradually, which keeps up the suspense and makes the book unable to be put down. After a tragic event that has torn her family apart, Mazzy pretty much has to take care of herself without much help from the outside world. Her father is more interested in his career than in his family, and the people he's gotten to keep a look on he catatonic mother are not always as reliable as could have been hoped. Mazzy's only real company comes from her neighbours, whom she in turns tries to push away and finds herself drawn towards depending on her mood of the day.

I loved the style of this book. Short sentences, and the voice of the character was clear as a bell.
