This would be 3 and a half stars, but a nudge higher because it was a debut novel.
I wanted to drink a tall glass of lemonade and rock in a chair on a porch while reading this. The author took me so clearly to a time and a place that I felt like I was there with her.

This book is very much something that I would normally not read but my roommate read it and loved it so I decided to borrow the book from a friend. There's something about this book that made me want to keep reading. I loved the characters and the author's wonderful conversational tone in writing. Though aspects of the book weren't that realistic, like the three independent black women who lived in the south and ran their own business, it was very easy to look past that and enjoy the story for w

It's a good book...I remember it being good when I read the first time. It isn't the greatest book I've ever read though. It's a typical coming-of-age story, reminds me a lot of (can you guess what I'm going to say?) To Kill a Mockingbird with a little bit of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Cold Sassy Tree thrown in for good measure. It's not a waste of time read though, I definitely like it.

I'd heard a lot about this book, mostly good. I liked it a lot overall. I think the motherless-southern-girl-coming-of-age thing is a bit overdone in literature, but there were some interesting twists here that kept it fresh.
