Shelves: own, fantasy, middle-grade, dragons

How did I not know this book existed until a month ago? It's been out two years! It has a dragon and a little red haired girl on the cover! And it's wonderful! A fascinating and unusual fantasy, like a fairy tale, or a story by E. Nesbit, with strange and wonderful dragon lore. A must read for fans of dragons, magic, and adventure! ...more

In a way this made me think of Ysabeau S. Wilce or Frances Hardinge, but without the sharp edges. The use of mythic elements and traditions is similar, but the personalities of the characters are wildly different. I was immediately sucked in by the title. I felt like the pacing flagged a little as the book went on, unfortunately. Also, once the ending finally explained the setup of the world ... it felt too deterministic, or something, to be satisfying to me. ...more

This isn't quite a fractured fairy tale, but there are so many familiar elements that it could almost be one.

Violet is (most emphatically) not a beautiful princess, with frizzy unmanageable hair, splotchy skin and eyes that don't match in size and color, but none of that seems to matter. She has one friend, Demetrius, and lives in the castle with her parents. One day, while exploring, she and Demetrius find a hidden room, with a dusty book and a very odd, very disturbing painting.
