What a powerful book! At the time it was written (1999) this was a groundbreaking book about speaking up on sexual assault. Anderson captures the post-traumatic stress of a teen who can't speak about what happened to her on an August night at a party. I flew through this book, slowing down at times to re-read and absorb parts of it. It’s an exquisite and heart-rending portrayal of one teen’s depression and extreme isolation after being raped at the age of 13. This was written 20 years ago, and I wonder if Melinda’s depression would have been so completely missed/mischaracterized by the adults in her life today. It’s a painful book, but with plenty of humor, as well as uplifting moments, especially those that show the powerful impacts of art,

Quick YA read about a girl who is ostracized after she calls the police from a party. She begins high school as a pariah, barely speaking to anyone and keeping the secret of what happened that night that led her to call the police. The writing is good, sharp and funny in some parts, painful in others. I'd definitely read more by this author.

I feel like I should have read this book in high school. Not because of anything that happened to me, but it might have given me more empathy for other students that I went to school with. The truth is that we all have situations that we have gone through that we wish hadn't happened. But it's the tough situations that make us who we are, as adults. This was a tough book to read in large chunks due to the emotional nature of the subject matter. I appreciate authors like Laurie Halse Anderson. Au
