Had I read this when I was younger, I think I would have loved it. I still found it both well-written and interesting, but I was very obviously above the target age.

It's strength is definitely in its writing style. Melinda hardly speaks, so there's very little dialog - and what little there is, is written like lines from a manuscript - most of the story is told through her thoughts and actions - or lack thereof. I don't read many Young Adult books, but this got a lot of good press, and I came across a used copy that was perfect for taking on vacation. I can see why it was highly recommended. Readers, especially those not too far from their own high school, will appreciate the ridiculousness of hers, which is rank with ironic battles over political correctness, tiresome school policy debacles and new cliche social groups (e.g., the Marthas, after Martha Stewart, a group of pristine girls who do crafts and volunteer work). I did want to know a bit more about Me ...more

This is absolutely in my top five YA novels. The emotional punch it packs is intense. The narrator seemed so real to me and her experiences felt so true - I actually felt sympathy for the writer for having spent so much time inside a character who'd had this terrible experience. This is brave, brave writing and deserves to be read. ...more

Heartbreaking and yet predictable. Perhaps I have read too much of this genre?
