I agree with others that the language/tone of this book was anachronistic, but it didn't bother me as much as this usually does. I think it's because I can't imagine how else this story could have been told. And I loved the story and its descriptions of life on a manor in the 13th century, with all its trials (the fleas, the filth, the boredom, and the complete lack of privacy for starters). I just loved that way Birdy tries to outwit her father's suitors for her hand in marriage! Alas, for women in medieval times, there were few choices, and ultimately she must try to, not completely avoid the inevitable, but make it as bearable as possible. Excellent, highly recommended! ...more
