Like Saving Winslow, The Unfinished Angel is a short book, and highlights how Creech can write sweet stories without them feeling treacly. Also like Saving Winslow, I think the brevity of the book harms the character development. In fact, I wasn't even aware I was nearing the end of the book because there was a lot of after-story material in the book that led me to think it was longer, and the narrative didn't lead me to believe I was at the end of the book. Apparently, I will read just about anything with an angel in it these days—even a kids’ book, in which I know there will be no chance of random angelsextiems. Actually, in this particular book, it seems there’s really no chance of anything. Nothing happens. There are some orphans and a girl with experimental fashion sense and an angelic narrator who speaks with an occasionally charming shaky grasp on grammar. But NOTHING HAPPENS. While this book had its charming moments and characters, I felt that the plot lacked cohesion. The use of broken English for the angel was an interesting take on narration, but by the end was a tad annoying and even confusing in places. I don't know how much the target audience would enjoy this book due to both the pacing and the voice. However, an advanced or older reader might still enjoy the story. ...more
