I put this under historical fiction, because I think Tarr always walks a fine line. Sure, it's about a woman who goes back in time and inhabits the body/life of an ancient Roman ancestor, but other than that, there is no magic. It's a straightforward look at the life of a widow during Marcus Aurelius' time. A wonderful book! ...more

Fantastic. Nicole, a lawyer in present day LA, wishes herself back to the ancient Roman empire under Marcus Aurelius where she wakes up in the body of Umma, a tavern keeper. The strength of this book was the incredible detail. I wouldn't have expected anything less, though, from the two authors. Reading this, I certainly had a few of my modern-day assumptions checked.
